al-Muwahhideen al-Druze in Israel

The Druze in Israel are a distinct ethnoreligious minority, numbering around 143,000, known for their unique faith, Arab cultural roots, and loyalty to the Israeli state.

Demographics and Distribution

The Druze make up approximately 1.6% of Israel’s population, with most residing in northern Israel, particularly in the Galilee, Carmel, and Golan Heights regions. They are native Arabic speakers and culturally identify as Arabs, though their religious identity as Druze is prioritized over ethnic or national affiliations. Israel hosts the world’s third-largest Druze population, after Syria and Lebanon. 

Religion and Culture

Druzism is a monotheistic and secretive faith that originated in 11th-century Egypt as an offshoot of Ismaʿīlī Shiʿism. The religion incorporates elements from Islam, Hinduism, and Greek philosophy and does not accept converts or proselytize, maintaining its practices within the community. Religious life is overseen by the Majlis al-‘Uqāl, a council of elders who preserve the community’s spiritual and cultural integrity. 

Historical Background

Historically, the Druze faced persecution and often sought refuge in mountainous regions for protection. In Israel, their alliance with the Jewish community began during the British Mandate period, strengthened by conflicts with neighboring Arab groups and culminating in Druze participation alongside Jewish forces during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. This cooperation established a foundation for their integration into Israeli society. 

Military Service and Political Integration

Unlike other Arab communities in Israel, Druze men are required to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), while women are exempt. This mandatory service has facilitated social mobility, political representation, and economic advancement, distinguishing the Druze from other Arab minorities. Members of the Druze community have attained high-ranking positions in politics and public service, reflecting their active engagement in Israeli civic life. 

Identity and Social Position

Survey data indicates that Israeli Druze prioritize their identity in the following order: religious (Druze), ethnic/cultural (Arab), and national (Israeli). Their loyalty to the state and integration into national defense make them unique among Arab communities in Israel, who often identify with the Palestinian national movement and are exempt from military service. 

Contemporary Significance

Today, the Druze community continues to maintain its distinct religious and cultural identity while actively participating in Israeli society. Their demographic growth, high birth rate, and strategic alliances ensure that they remain a vital and influential minority within Israel.
