al-Muwahhideen al-Druze in Syria

The Druze are an ethnoreligious group whose faith originated in the 11th century as an offshoot of Ismaili Islam, though it is now considered a separate religion. They follow a monotheistic, Abrahamic tradition emphasizing reason, truthfulness, and spiritual unity, and they do not accept converts. In Syria, the Druze population is estimated at around 700,000 to 1 million, making up roughly 3% of the national population. Most live in the Jabal al-Druze (Suwayda) region, with smaller communities in Damascus suburbs, Quneitra, and historically in the Golan Heights. 

The Druze have historically maintained a degree of autonomy and often faced persecution from various Muslim regimes, including the Fatimids, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. In modern Syria, they played a significant role in the Great Syrian Revolt of 1925–27 under Sultan al-trash, resisting French colonial rule. Throughout the 20th century, the Druze navigated complex relations with the Syrian state, sometimes supporting the Baathist regime for its secular policies, while at other times facing repression, such as under Adib Shishakli in the early 1950s. 

Since the fall of Bashar al-Asad in December 2024, the Druze have faced renewed insecurity. The southern province of Suwayda has been a flashpoint for violence involving Druze militias, Sunni Bedouin tribes, and Syrian government forces. Clashes in July 2025 resulted in hundreds of deaths, mass displacement, and reports of atrocities, including killings, abductions, and sexual violence against Druze civilians. The UN has documented attacks on Druze communities, highlighting extrajudicial killings, destruction of property, and gender-based violence. 

Druze factions have formed local security councils, such as the Suwayda Military Council, to protect their communities amid the collapse of central authority. Some factions have sought external support, including appeals to Israel, which has conducted airstrikes in Syria citing protection of the Druze as justification. 

The Druze community in Syria is internally divided. Some leaders advocate cooperation with the interim Sunni-led government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, while others, led by figures like Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, resist central authority and maintain autonomous militias. Historically, the Druze have balanced survival with political influence, often leveraging their strategic position in southern Syria to negotiate security and autonomy. 

Druze religious practice is esoteric and secretive. They follow a batini interpretation of Islam, rejecting public rituals such as fasting during Ramadan or pilgrimage to Mecca. The community emphasizes endogamy, clan solidarity, and spiritual education, and historically, they have blended into surrounding societies to protect their identity. 

The Druze in Syria face ongoing threats from armed groups, government forces, and regional instability. Humanitarian conditions in Suwayda are dire, with internally displaced persons living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. The community continues to navigate a precarious position between asserting autonomy, cooperating with the state, and seeking protection from external actors. 

In summary, the Druze in Syria are a resilient minority with a rich historical legacy, concentrated in the south, facing severe security challenges in the post-Assad era, and maintaining a delicate balance between autonomy, survival, and political engagement.
